Not sure if this helps but I have a hyphenated middle-name. They didn't drop the hyphen, it was there on all correspondence. It's not all that uncommon anymore to have hyphenated surnames so I can't see why it would be a problem for them.
I asked this because while filling edv application I didn't use hyphen for my wife's surname but I noticed that my wife used hyphen while filling her DS-230 form. The 2NL I got, her surname is not hyphenated. I think they just compare the original application and DS230 forms, keep the original one??
