How does a senator help the process?

I read lots of postings in the past that the local senator helped to speed up the green card process, to locate the misplaced documents etc... Is there someone out there who had any experience with a Senator's office and how can they really help us?
 
Senators will not be able to help in Employment based petitions. They will be able to intrevene only if the adjudication has taken longer than normal. This is what I was told by my Senators staff who deals with INS issues.

I received help from a Senators office due to the INS CSC's incompetancy. What happened is that my I-140 was approved but the approval notice was never sent to the NVC thus delaying my CP application by 5 months. THE IDIOTS at CSC said they lost the approval :rolleyes: and it took the Senators office to contact them and straighten the issue out.
