how come fingerprints expire?

This is just a random question about finger print expiration. Is there a scientific reason that after 2 years or whatever finger prints are no longer reliable?

What's the point of all the databases of fingerprints with criminals/terrorists if they're prints are going to change in 2 years? Do they track these criminals/terrorists down and re-fingerprint them every two years to keep information current?

Isn't someone's finger-print like DNA, a unique and unchangeable thing?

Maybe brand new criminals/terrorists would have entered the databases, so they need to re-check, but they can do that easily with the existing prints they have from 485 people. So that's not really a reason to re-fingerprint people.

I'm just curious why...

Looks like you are a newbie from what you are asking.

THey have 5gb scsi hard disk to store everybody's fingerprints. So they

The USCIS does not store the fingerprints you have taken. They are transmitted immediately to the FBI for checking. If they come back clean, I guess the USCIS takes their chance that you will not commit a crime during the next 15 months. After 15 months, they need to take them again, because as I said, they do not store them anywhere. There is talk that they will be using a new system that will allow them to be stored digitally.

they have now realized their stupidity and I believe have plans to store finger prints digitally for a longer duration. I saw some document where they mentioned putting some system in the next fiscal or maybe as early as this month. I do not recollect the exact time frame.
