Hello,
I am a 20 year old homosexual man in a serious, long-distance relationship with an American I met whilst he was studying abroad here in England. I am currently an undergraduate at the University of York, which is in the top 10 of all of the universities in the UK and I am studying Politcs and Economics (I am a British citizen).
My problem is that due to the 'defence of marriage act', civil partnerships cannot be recognised at a federal level and could even be damaging to me if I persued a temporary 6-year VISA.
I was hoping that there might be some route into the US since my chosen career after graduation in 2007 is probably going to be teaching which is usually an area in short supply. Could anyone suggest what the best way of getting citizenship in the US is for someone in my rather unique position?
I was considering a move to Canada, using my British citizenship to live over the border with my partner who's family lives near the Canadian border in Seattle. So that is another option for me... But US citizenship would be a better route for our long-term future.
Sorry for the amount of detail. But I really am reaching out for help and I feel that at a young age I still have many doors open for me, especially since I am an educated young man.
