Helping out

An old guy asked me if he has any chance of getting a green card so he can go back and forth between China and the US to see his two grandkids. One here one there.

He's 80 years old and was in the Chinese army decades ago. Don't think he's been in since the late 70s. He was also a doctor, not a regular soldier, so I don't think he took up arms against anyone. I think he was in the party because they all had to be.

Think they'd let a law abiding old man have a green card?

No, without any lawful basis they will not just hand out a GC just because that person is a law abiding man, there are siblings of law abiding US citizens that wait over a decade to get a GC to come to America.

Who will sponsor him? Does he have any US citizen children?

There are provisions that would allow green cards for people who involuntarily became members of a communist party. But they still need to otherwise qualify for the green card on the basis of family sponsorship or other qualifications.
