Help with N400

This may sound strange but I don't remember the middle name of my ex-husband, I only know the first initial. However, in the N400 application the full middle name is requested when applicable.

How can I resolve the issue? Could I just write the first initial and in parentheses that I don't remember the full name?

He never used it, and I know he told me what it was, but it's been so long...

Thanks in advance

if your husband has a relatively unique last name, you may try one of the people look up sites like zabasearch.com, pipl.com, and so on and see if they have it. Sometimes they do.

Thanks Perpetual (love your screen name). I checked but I could not get more info fromthe websites.
It's so frustrating...We were married in '92, even the marriage certificate lists only the first initial...we filed all other documents (joint taxes etc) without the middle name.

Yea, the sites don't go back that far, or may only have middle initial. It was worth a try. I would say just put the initial and explain during interview if asked, I don't think they would be that picky especially if you have documents with middle initial only handy.

I am sure just entering the first initial of the middle name will not get you into any trouble.

Thank you so much. I am from Greece and middle names are very uncommon so it was not something I really cared about.

Is his middle name on the divorce certificate?

Nope, only first and last name and social security numbers for both of us.

Can one do a quick credit check on another person via Trans Union,
Equifax, Experian etc simply to get his full name without that person's authorization?

WBH, thank you for your response. It is against the law to do a credit check without a person's authorization.

Green fever1, there is a checklist of documents needed for N400, and you can find it on the official website.

Is it possible your ex-husband full name is on yoru own credit history
report? Have you ever filed joint tax return with yoru ex-husband?
If so, get tax transcript for that year is possible. Check into your 401k account etc.

You can also use www.switchboard.com to see if your ex-husband's full name show up or not

If all fails, simply write a note next to the middle name fild saying "I don't remmeber my -exhusband's middle name".
Did you ever earned any immigration benefits thru this ex-husband? If yes, this approach may not be good because
not knowing spouse's middle name may let USCIS doubt marriage but if you never gained any immigration
benefits thru him, I think they can accept that you just do not have a strong memory

Yes, I got my green card thru that marriage. Our marriage license lists only the first initial and all of our income tax were filed w/o his middle name. Even some letters we got from irs did not include the middle name.
I am aware that my poor memory may raise doubts but I will do my best, providing tax transcripts, and pictures with our families, from trips, etc, throughout the years we were married.
Wish me luck!

Could be it possible his middle name is just that initial?

Like Harry S Truman, his middle name is just S that is why many argue those
who write Harry S. Truman are wrong because it is just Harry S Truman

You know, I was just thinking about that too! How funny, right?

Well, thank you very much for all your effort and time to answer my question. I don't know what else to do but I appreciate your feedback.

Don't bring unnecessary attention to it with any "I do not remember" notes. Just write the initial, and explain if asked. This is your long-ago ex, not current husband, so there is a good chance the interviewer won't care about this detail if you don't bring attention to it.

And don't bother to bring pictures and other such evidence of your old marriage. Nobody gets asked for that for their previous marriages (except maybe a few people suspected of marriage fraud). Just make sure you bring the divorce decree.
