Hi All,
To get the unemployement benefit from the labor department, Is it necessary to apply for a new Social Security Number after the passport is stamped with GC?

You help is much appreciated.

Yeah,
You need to give them a copy of your PR Card or copy of your stamping on passport. To be on safer side try applying after getting your plastic card.

Hi JoeF Thanks alot...

In your post you stated the Social Securty number is for good. I believe if someone is working on H1 visa and then GC comes, a new SSN should be obtained from the SSN office, which may take upto 8 or more weeks in a scenario if SSN offices checks back with INS.

My concern was that to claim the Unemployement benefits is it necessary to obtain the new SSN or GC staming on the passport would be good enough?

Thanks again for your response.

Thanks wownow...

A copy of GC staming is to be given for Unemployement Benefit OR to apply for a new SSN? Can you please shed some light?

My spouse lost the job few months before the GC approval and now that we got the GC approval, can the Unemployement Benefits be claimed.

What do we need to do to cliam the Unemepoyment benefits?

Many thanks for your help.

Sharmista what rubbish are u talking about. GC dont have to get new SSN. Once a person assigned a SSN it remains his for ever no matter what your legal status

I think you misunderstood the post ... you can get a new SS card after GC (still with the old SS#) without the words "vaild for work only with INS authorization". Your SS#, once assigned, never changes.

I still don\'t understand why people are so specific about their change in SSN wherein the plastic card it clearly states that the bearer of this card can reside and work permanently in US.
