Help-Previous employer threatening

Hi,

I came in US this year in January with a Consulting Comp A . The company placed me with Client B through their preferred Vendor C. Both the vendor and the client is in California. I had a non competent agreement signed with A.
after 6 month I joined the Vendor C directly and keep working with client B. Before joining Vendor C I told them that I have a non competent agreement but the Vendor told me that Non Competent agreements are not valid in California and so I joined.
But now My previous employer had sent me a letter that I have to pay 25000 $ as I breach the contract.

I m very tensed, what should I do now ? The vendor has provided me a attorney who is looking into the case but stil I m very confused about what to do?
Has anyone has any similar experience like this? well I wish no one has to face such situation but still if there is someone who has gone through this , please give me some advise ?

Also, When I came here in US it took around 2 1/2 month to get my SSN number . Wanted to know if Employer has to pay me for that period also ? or the pay actually starts after you get the SSN ?

----------------send the copy of letter to C who told you that Non Competent agreements are not valid in California. and ask him what to do

------------ let the attorney handle it
