Help point a noob in the right direction? I want to move back to the US

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right section or even the right forum because frankly I'm not sure if "immigration" is what I'd even be doing.

I'm a US citizen... at least I think I am. I was born in Ok in 1976 to my American father and Canadian-born mother (they were married at the time). I lived in the US until I was 4 or 5 when my father took a job in Saudia Arabia. There, my parents split and my mother took me to Canada where I've been ever since.

I don't have any US paperwork. At one point I had my birth certificate but that got lost in a fire in 1995. My mother tried getting a replacement and received a response stating that the OK bombing events led to difficulties in the process and to expect delays... we never heard from them again (we haven't followed up). I do have a Canadian passport showing "Altus USA" as my birth place but that's about it (the passport was granted while we still had my birth cert).

So now in my 30's, I'm married (to a Canadian) and educated and looking for a change and want to move to the US.

Am I a Canadian looking for immigration information? Or am I an American that just needs to prove it?

I have no Social Security Number.

I'm not sure if my situation is rare and complicated or common and straight forward... don't really know where to begin.

Thanks.

Steve

Have you asked the US embassy or consulate where you live? Did you ever have a US passport, or did you travel on a Canadian passport from day 1?

Thank you for your response. I phoned the US embassy, but you can't get to a person and it says to make an appointment in person. They are a 4 hour drive from where I am. I thought I'd try to get my preliminary info on forums like this.

I don't think I ever had a US passport. I could be wrong, but I think back then (late 70's, early 80's) children didn't need them and just traveled under parental documents. If I'm wrong and I must have had one, then it would have been a US passport as I had no connection with Canada until '86. My first Canadian passport was given to me as a teen right before we lost my birth cert in a fire... '94 or '95.
