Hello folks,I'm planning to visit Thailand (not COP) next month, and I'm two month away eligible for GC,here is my question:
1.can I travel to Thailand with my RTD and safely return to the U.S with it?Do I need addtional paperworks?I just want to make sure I'll not be stucked with the IOs when entering.
2.does anybody have the experience dealing with Thailand visa? What document should I bring with and do thai consulate and immigration checkpoint accept RTD?
3.should I return my I-94 to airlines when I leave if they ask?and before entering U.S,do I need to file another I-94?

this is my first time leaving this country since granted asylum,so thanks guys for your help, any input will be appreciated

Your RTD will get you back into the US. I don't know if Thailand accepts the RTD, but I've never heard of any issues with them (Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore do not allow it). I never gave anybody my I94. You don't need to return it as you are not on a non-immigrant visa. When you come back, you only have to fill out a customs form, and nothing else. Have fun and good luck.

man,you helped me a lot, thanks, got another question.I just checked the thai consulate website and they say the travel document not expire within 6 months, but I found my RTD will expire in July 2010,so I am wondering if I were refused to enter thailand at the passport control, can I use my NP to enter and exit thailand (my NP is eligible for thai Visa-on-arrival) and when I reenter the U.S, I just show the RTD to IO,even there is no thai stamp on it?just in case, the consulate issues me visa but refused by thai immigration checkpoint.I dont want to be deported on the same plane.do you guys think it's possible to do that?If the IO aske me about the trip I can show him my NP and explain it.Thanks

Well, that is a grey area. I think I've read on this forum that people have done that before, so it depends on how comfortable you are doing that. In my opinion, Thailand will probably let you in as long as you are issued a visa, especially if you're only going for a few days. I would wait and see if people who have done this before would like to weigh in about what happened when they re-entered the US.

if you could get a visa on your rtd you will be fine, you enter and leave thailand with rtd

you need to give your i 94 at the airline counter when you leave america, when you come back you need to fill a new one, they will pass you in the plane and give it to american immigration upon arrival

if you could not get a visa to thailand using rtd

you enter and leave thailand with your passport, and when you arrive to usa you use rtd]

I didn't relinquish my I94 when I left the US on my RTD, and I was never hassled about it, nor was I hassled when I entered on the RTD without filling out an I94. Are you sure one is necessary?

when i was asylee before i got my green card, i used to do that give them my i 94 during departure and got new one during arrival

only when i got green card i stopped getting i 94,i was told i do not need it anymore

Hmm, we have 2 experiences here. I suggest you take your I94 with you but only give it to the airline if asked for it. If the airline doesn't take it, don't fill out a new one when you come back since you have one that says ASYLUM STATUS GRANTED INDEFINITELY. Don't give this to immigration either unless they ask for it. Stick with just the RTD and the customs form. Is that cool?

I agree

As I know, airline stopped taking I-94s long time ago, since they log departures with USCIS or US Customs and Border Protection.

When I used to come over to USA as a visitor, I used to keep I-94 as a souvenir after my departure

You do not need an I-94 to leave USA using RTD or any other passport, so do not waive your asylum I-94 to everyone, use it only when you return to USA.

I recently travelled on my RTD. Airline requested my I94 at the check in.

Also when I travelled back to US I had to fill one out. I was sent to secondary Inspection and officer asked for my new I-94. After your admitted they will stamp you ned I 94. So make to be prepared and have all your documents with you to avoid any delays.

Best of luck !

It is not true that airlines do not ask for I94s. You're not supposed to keep them if you come as a non-immigrant. I, as an immigrant (with asylum status) did not surrender my I94 or fill out a new one. That's all. It's up to you to do what you choose.

I agree, as they don't have the right to ask for the I-94.

As for the non-immigrant, you are adviced to return the I-94 "optional" to the immigration officer at the airport when stamping your passport, however, that was in the past, there is a new mechanism used that doesn't require a non immigrant to return the I-94 since his airport departure report is enough. this rule applies to air travelling only. According to USCIS instructions: not returning the non immigrant I-94 could result in a delay in your next visiting visa... this is out of the subject since we are immigrants.
