Help Please

Hey Guys.

As you may know I am very much interested in going over to america (Leaving the UK).

I am in Voluntary Education at present (5th year - High School)
You may leave high school in 4th year and you may stay up to 6th year.

I am yet to actually sit my exams for this year but once I do I can then continue education for a final 6th year (I can leave at any time). or I can leave and go to college.

If I were to leave after my exams I could go to college and get a HNC in year one and a HND (just below a degree) in year two.

I am getting sick of school so I would really love to go to college.

But If I were to stay on for another year and get some highers (just below a HNC) then I could go to university and get a degree (slightly better than a HND).

There would be nothing stopping me from going to university after college and getting a degree.

The reason I am more in favour of going to college is because I know lots of people there and its very close to my home so it would be a lot cheaper than jumping on the train every day (driving to Glasgow isn't going to work - too much traffic).

After college/university I would be hoping to go for a job as a programmer or a web designer. I would probably prefer a programmer as you usually get paid more and it seems to be a job thats more in demand.

My main goal in life is to live and work in the USA. My second goal is to get a job as a pilot so I need a backup because it's not exactly realistic (I need to find out how to make £70,000.00 in about 4-6 years so I can go over to Florida, learn to fly and earn a BS degree also).

I have an online business which I am hoping to work really hard on to grow the business and allow me to have some income to go towards the pilot fund. Also I would work here after I have completed college/university to earn more cash.

I see it this way if I fail the chances are I'll still have a considerable sum of money.

But yeah sorry to write so much but It's best to explain it now rather than explain half of it later ;-)

But anyway yeah thanks a lot for your help.

I have looked into various other places but if I am going to live in the USA and hopefully work as a pilot then it would be much more beneficial to have the american equivelant (FAA) to the European (JAA) licenses.

I'll look into the Lufthansa one ;-)

Any thoughts on whether to go to college or whether to stay another year and just do university and get a better qualification (slightly better than a college certificate).

You are right their main campus is in Florida.

I've looked into it before but the flight school I'd be going to would give me the same thing (I'm sure its the same course and level - I'd need to check) and it works out a lot cheaper. Reason being is because I work on the degree while I am also flying. Whereas if I learned to fly at the school I'm likely to go with (SunState Aviaton in Kissimmee) I'd have to pay for accommodation for the duration of the course at Embry Riddle and getting my ATP license.

I've taken a picture of a leaflet I was given out at school recently. It contains a table which should explain things better.

At college I would get up to a HND (as you can see just below a normal degree)


Right well out of the two universities I can do one of these degree courses:
Glasgow University

So from that table I would guess that a BSc is an Honours Degree and the MSci is the Masters Degree

Lets say I took one of the two year courses above. And if and when I came over to the USA to learn to fly and Study for the following degree:

UVCS Aviation & SunState Aviation
Course: Bachelor of Science in Aviation
Qualification(s): BS
Duration: 4 Years

Say I came over and completed my flight training and the BS Degree would I then be able to adjust my status as soon as I've completed the courses and be entitled to a green card? or is this going down a H1B route with sponsorship from an employer?

Okay lets say things dont go to plan and I cant get enough money to go to Florida and get my ATP license and a BS Degree.

Does that mean you could combine 2x 2 year degrees or does it have to be one four year course thats equivelant to a US Bachelor Degree?

If you are so sure that you want to come to the US then enrol in a US college and do a US degree (online even). It would the immigration process a whole lot easier. Once you have the degree an employer can sponsor you for a green card.

Just wanted to check. I may have came across wrong but I never intended to even try getting a H1B for a pilot. Infact if I was applying for a job im pretty much sure that wouldnt help because look at it from the employers point of view. Theres probably hundreds applying for the same position and the chances are they aint gonna choose me over someone who has rights to work in the USA and has the same sort of qualifications.

You can't just combine 2 2-year degrees to end up at a 4-year degree...

Didn't think so but it would be nice.


Thanks again Joe. I think I'll take your advice and just stay on for a year then do the four year course. I dont really see the point in doing a HNC/D if I'm going to go for a 4 year degree.
