Dear Rajiv and Other friends,

First, let me thank you very much for lot of help and support throught the painful GC journey.

Second, sorry for the very long post. Please be considerate and reply my mail.

I got my GC 2 years back.

I desperately need your help on my name change in my passport and GC.

My country passport has 2 different words as my last name Ex. "Tom Harry" and first name as Rod
Last Name: "Tom Harry"
First Name: Rod
My H1 Visa, GC all were done with the same last name.

Now I am facing so many issues with 2 last names in daily life like my blood report got changed recently.
So I am seriously considering to change my name as follows.

Last Name: Tom
First Name: Harry
Middle Name: Rod
My name is supposed be as mentioned above. Somehow my name got changed in passport nearly 15 years ago.

My country consulate is ready to change my name in passport as per my request. But I am afraid if I face any issues with GC and citizenship later on.

Can I simply change my name in passport then in SSN, then in Drives license and finally in GC?
Will it be a issue when I file for my Citizenship lateron?

Thanks a lot for all your help for so many years.

You'll have to change it in the GC first before changing the SSN card and Driver's license. The DMV and Social Security office will want to see the GC having the corrected name before they make the change.

Thanks JacoLantern,

I am sure the Passport office will change my Name as in Birth certificate.

But How about changing in GC? Will they create any issue?

Simply filing I-90 to change name will solve the issue?

Once again thanks a lot for your reply. You have helped me with many questions on GC 2 years ago.

Thanks

If you are changing the GC to match your birth certificate, then all you need to do is file I-90 to get the GC changed. You'll have to pick option E and pay the full fee. Submit a copy of the birth certificate, and bring the original BC to the fingerprinting appointment in case they want to see it.

Thanks Jackolantern.

When I apply with Option E, Will they ask for any court order for name change?

Do I need to send back the original GC to them?

What are the usual processing time line for I-90?

Please reply.

Thanks

If you are changing the GC to match the birth certificate, that is not considered a name change, unless you had some other name change since birth. So just submit a copy of the birth certificate.

Do I need to send back the original GC to them?
Submit a copy of the GC with the application. Give them the original GC when you go for fingerprinting, and bring the original BC for them to look at (but don't let them keep the BC). You can get an I-551 stamp when you are there.

What are the usual processing time line for I-90?
3-6 months.

Hi Jackolantern,

2 more questions.

1. When and Where should I get my passport stamped as I have to hand over the old GC?

2. On my birth certificate, name is given as full name.

It is not classified, like First Name, Last Name, Middle name etc.
Entire name is given as full name.
Name: Tom Harry Rod

Will they accept my interpretation of what is first and what is last name?

Thanks!

Thanks!

You will get a notice for fingerprints/biometrics. At that same place and time, you can get your passport stamped.

Normally if your name is listed as this:
Name1 Name2 Name3
it would be interpreted as Name1=first, Name2=middle, Name3=Last if there is no indication of what is first/last/middle.

If there is a comma like this:

Name1, Name2 Name3
it would be interpreted as Name1=Last, Name2=first, Name3=middle.

I am sorry for the confusion.

In Birth Certificate name is without any commas like
Name1 Name2 Name3

Name1 - Last Name
Name2 - First Name
Name3 - Middle Name

How can I request USCIS to interpret Name1 as Last Name as there are no commas on the Birth certificate?

How are your parents names listed on the birth certificate? Do they have the same last name (Name1) as you? Is there anything on the certificate indicating which is their last name? Is it a cultural standard in your original country that the family name is listed first?
