Help me regarding H1 start date

From next week i am going to work on F1 OPT under non-profit organization. . Can i give start date on H1 whenever i wish or is that mandatory to give 6 months later date while i file, as I am planning to bring my spouse on H4 soon. Help me out
 
You misunderstand. The start date must be WITHIN 6 months from filing date. Technically, you can set start date to tomorrow.
