I went to the naturalization interview on 2/13/12. I cleared the test however the officer wanted to see copies of my old passport which i did not have at that time. So he gave me an N14 continuance which I have sent along with photocopies of my old passport which he had asked.I am really quite anxious as to what will happen now. Also unfortunately my green card expired last month. So now do i renew it? or wait for word from the immigration office. My stay here has been 5 years continuous now.

This is normal procedure, IO just want to have those copies in your file. Nothing to worry about. You will get your oath letter in 3-4 weeks:)

No need to panic now. Just wait for the USCIS notice. If you do not receive anything in the coming two or three weeks, give them a call and ask or schedule an infopass appointment.

Regarding your greencard, if you do not have any immediate travel plans, there is no need to renew it.

no i have no travel plans right now.....but i read in some of the posts here that at the oath ceremony one is required to have a green card that is valid.....will it be a problem??

Was your greencard valid for at least 6 months at the time when you sent in your N-400? If yes, you will be fine, since the USCIS requires that you have a greencard with at least 6 month validity left at the time when you submit your N-400 application. If this is the case and your card expires during the process, it is fine.

If this is not the case, i.e., at the time of your N-400 application your card did not have 6 months left, you might be still fine, but it really depends on the officer who is collecting the greencards on the oath day. I read about a case where one applicant did not have any problems during the oath. It's your call.

my green card was valid at the time of application...but even if i apply for a renewal now...it will take at least 3 months for the card to renew...i really have no clue what to do!!

Well, the USCIS would only like to see the Notice of Application for the greencard renewal. If you ask my personal opinion though, since they did not bring up your expiring/expired greencard during your interview, you will be most likely fine if you take your expired greencard to the oath. So just go to the oath. The worst case that can happen is that they will postpone your oath but I see a very small probability for that. They will most likely just take your expired greencard and give you your certificate of naturalization.

If there was going to be a problem it would have been at the interview. You got through the interview without it being a problem; it's almost certain you'll be OK for the oath. Worst case is that they kick you out of the oath, then you to apply for renewal and bring the I-90 receipt to the later oath date.

i have still not recieved any letter from the immigration office!!! :(

First call them and see if you can get any info. If not, then schedule an infopass and talk to an agent in person.

i just got a letter today saying that i have to provide additional documentation showing that i did not abandon my green card....actually i got my green card in 2001 and at that time i was studying in medical school in my home country...so i had to take extension permits....i got two extension permits each for two years...however i only hvae one in my posession as the second one was taken by the immigration official at the airport on arrival to US
now i'm really in a fix as to what to do
my green card also expired in january
so i'm thinking of applying for renewal....will it be a problem to get it renewed??
and will they renew it now???

So they're referring to some long trips you took more than 5 years ago?

Send a copy of the reentry permit you have, and explain why you don't have the first one. Also mention that a record of the first reentry permit should be in your A-file (if you know the issue date of the first permit, provide it so it's easier for them to find it).

my green card also expired in january
so i'm thinking of applying for renewal....will it be a problem to get it renewed??

When you filed the N-400, did you have at least 6 months remaining on the GC? If yes, you are entitled to free I-551 stamping in your passport.

no i had only 4 months left on my green vard when i applied
so now will it be a problem getting it renewed???
i'm really worried
also yes they are asking about trips in 2001
i will send them the documents but i'm really frustrated with the process

No problem with the renewal, except that you will have to pay for it because you applied for naturalization with less than 6 months remaining on the GC. If you filed the N-400 with at least 6 months remaining on the GC, you would be eligible for the free I-551 stamp.

When you apply for renewal and pay the fee you can take the I-90 receipt and get the I-551 stamp in the passport, which you can then use to travel or obtain employment while waiting for the plastic GC.
