Hello,

Both me and my wife have interview on July 25th in Chicago. We got our PR in June 2003, but were out of the country for 176 days (less than six months) in 2004 and again in 2005 for 84 days. Both were for employment reasons. We worked for an US employer, but had to work at their offshore center for some time. After 2005 June, we have been in the country all the time except a 3 week vacation in 2007.

Will we be trouble at the interview? If the IO asks us about our reason of being out of the country (which I am sure he will), should we tell them about employment ( I do not have any proof to show him) or just say that is was mainly due to personal reasons? I have filed the US tax returns all the five years, paid my mortage all the 5 years, utility bills etc., and I definitely have intent to live in the country.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

If you were overseas working for the employer, tell them exactly that. They should be able to look at your tax returns and employment history and see that you were still employed by that company during your trips. If they need additional proof, they'll ask for it and allow you some time to provide it after the interview.

I won't worry about it. just sleep and relax. You will be fine.

Basically what you did was to take a rather long business trip. Tell the officer that you were put in charge of finishing a project at an overseas office. Happens all the time. You have nothing to worry.

have filed the US tax returns all the five years
Did you file resident US tax return or non-resident US tax return?
Did you file state tax return?
Was it resident or non-resident state tax return?

I filed both the US Federal and State tax return as a resident since I was here almost 6 months during 2004 and 10 months during 2005.

Does that make a difference?

You will be fine. You will have no problem at interview since you didn’t have a trip over 6 months. Furthermore, it is unlikely that IO will ask you details about your trip.

If your trip was over 6 months up to 1 year and if you had multiple long absences – then they might want to see the proof of residence (taxes, lease/mortgage, utility bills, payroll etc).

Let us know who it went. Good luck!

Sounds fine to me; you have two separate trips separated by a reasonable interval, followed by a long period back in the US, all while working for the same US employer.

Thanks to everyone for your response. You guys have given us a lot of confidence.

Will definitely post my interview experience.

Cleared interview

Both me and my wife cleared the interview in chicago yesterday. Both the IO's were very nice to talk to and made us comfortable. The procedure was the same as explained by others in the forum. The first thing was the civics test, then going over the N-400 application and then signing and printing your names on a bunch of documents and the photograph. The whole process took 15 minutes for both of us.

The IO did not ask anything about the 176 and 84 days we spent out of the country during the last five years.

My IO told me to expect the oath letter in the next 30/60 days, but my wife's IO told to expect it in the next 90 days.

Thats my story, phew!!! we are relieved.

Congratulations!

As I have already told you, there was no reason for you to be scared and it was highly unlikely for IO to ask any details about your trips – since both of them were under 6 months.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
