Help! H1B renewal - Processing time for Maryland/Vermont Service Center

I have just applied to renew my H1B in Maryland (Vermont Service Center). My current H1 expires in mid April. Does anybody know what or where I can get the processing time? Also in case my I94/visa expires before approval can I file for I 539 or some such form to protect my status?

Not that long

Mine took 40 days from the Notice date to the Approval date - you will receive the EAC receipt number along with your receipt of application, and then all you can do is wait and keep checking your application status every few days on the INS automated phone line.
