History:
Wife and Kids: applied for 485 as depepnents in 2002
Me : Primary, waiting for 485 Approval which should be around the corner.

My wife, kids's AP expiered while they were outside US. Last year, I applied for their extention in TX and documents were returned to be processed in an office in Washington for that matter -considered as humanitarian-.
Result:
They said something like "Our office can not issue visas and no enough humanitarian reason", another way of denial.
TX office Sent me FingerPrint Re-Schedule for wife and oldest kid to be here in 2 weeks !!

Questions:
- Can they go to Embassy at home country and try to get re-entry visa - taking all documents (485/AP/FP old and new,....).
- What if at embassy they got Rejected stamps. Can I Apply for
"Follow to Joint" Later.

I think you should contact your attorney. Your wife and kids should have returned before the expiry of their APs. If not, I think, INS considers their I485s abandoned. You may have to apply I485s for them after you get your green card and wait till it is processed. I am sorry to say this, but I think it is like that. Anyway, this is just my opinion based on what I understand from what I read.

Goodluck.....
