health insurance question

Hello,

I am not sure if this question is appropriate for this forum.
My mother who is over 70 years of age recently got her
green card through me. Now that I am trying to get her
private health insurance, I have come up against a wall.
All insurance companies seem to assume that she is
covered by Medicare and they only offer supplementary
insurance coverage.

But as a non-citizen, she cannot be covered by Medicare
(at least that is what I understand). So then who would
cover new immigrants for health insurance? She can\'t
become a citizen until 5 years from now. But in the
meantime, what are we to do? A visitor\'s insurance plan
won\'t do in this case since she is no longer a visitor but a
permanent resident.

We are very anxious about this situation. Please advise
us if you can.

Thanks.

I don;t agree with this. I have seen few people who are covered under medicare and had got their GC 7-8 months back ( they are around 70 years of age and are in California state).

Theyu are covered under Medi-cal.

ask for individual plans offered by Calfarm, Blue Cross, Blue shield...

call their agents...that costs less than 150 bucks...

No Title

Some states provide Medicaid. but, mostly if they got their GC after 1996, they cannot get Medicaid. You have to buy private insurance which runs about $300 per month with no prescription drug coverage.

Medi-Cal is the CA version of medicaid, and

CA is one of the 32 states that allow all Supplemental Social Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries to be automatically elegible for medicaid. That means, one has to qualify for SSI to receive medicaid in CA. However, SSI requires a US citizenship or 40 work credits. Please check our http://www.ssa.gov for more information. Actually I am facing the same situation since both my wife and I are the only child in the family and we have yet to figure out a decent way to support 4 parents, ourselves and two kids in the US.
