Hi all, Heath Insurance seems to be a major issue in the US right now. What advice can you give to selectees before coming to the US in this regard? Also, what is the average rate of private insurance for a young family? Where we live, the monthly premium is around $430.00. Thanks in advance.

I pay $ 930 for 2 month premium with a $ 6000.- deductable each year in network, out of network it is $ 12000.- deductable...

And the premiums are scheduled to go up pretty soon and up much higher due to Obamacare so welcome to the US, hopefulle it will soon to be revised.....Companies are canceling their heath care programs due to Oabamcare, they are better of paying the fine, and that might be the same for our family, since Obamacare made sure that you have to be accepted at all times..so people can wait for the big bills to come in and than start to pay ins. premium...

WOW! bentlebee, that's a lot of money!. Your premium is almost the amount of my Mortgage payment!! They really need to revise Obamacare. It's rediculous.

I think it is ridiculous to blame the health care reform for the current health insurance premiums which were set before the legislation was voted in.
These premiums are the result of one decade of double digit premium increases. Health care should have been reformed a long time ago. I cannot say that I am thrilled with the current shape of the legislation. The most important factors for reigning in the increases have been removed due to the obstructionist part of the congress.

So yeah, I expect the premiums to continue going up, the reform is too impotent to stop that. But they would have gone up reform or not.

I pay $1400 for two semesters/ one year or $900 for one semester. Insurance is mandatory at the college I go and it sucks cause I paid for it more than two years already and it does not even cover anything. When I did my medicals for the AOS, the insurance company covered around 100$ from $600 how much my total bill was. I later had to apply for the slides based on my income and end up paying only 15% of the remaining sum.

i pay travel insurance ,every time when i come over to the US i pay for 6 months coverage even if i actually have GC for 2 years now its far cheaper and also my insurance company from back home can not screw me like here in the US they like to do sometimes (refusing to pay on account of some ''small print '' shite)
i used the insurance once and funny thing is they charge my insurance company back in OZ far less then they would charge an american resident /citizen for the same intervention ?! of course in the hospital i just said i'm a visiting tourist and produced my insurance card from OZ and passport (they thought its AUSTRIA !!so they keept coming back asking do I need someone to translate to German !!??...what a bunch of morons I have to say ), anyways that would be my advice ,GET TRAVEL INSURANCE IN YOUR COUNTRY BUT DO NOT TELL THEM YOU HAVE A GC AND IF/WHEN (GOD FORBID) YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY IN US JUST TELL THEM YOU ARE VISITING TOURIST , that is the best deal around .I know lost of people who do the same
also know some French people living in NY who are getting canned food from home back in France every 2 weeks but that is another story :D
