Hi everyone.

I'm from China and my status is AS8 right now. I've heard some stories about how dangerous to return to our original country.

But, sometimes we have to go because of an emergency or any other issue. Have you ever renturned and left your original country successfully? Please share your story.

Yes people have returned safely but there are also people who ran into trouble with the public security bureau.

Just remember this: you are still their citizen (you are using their passport) and you did break Chinese law by spoiling your motherland's image in a foreign country (the asylum application) :)

And there is not much you can do for yourself if they detain you.

If the plane didn't crash, then enjoy the trip, I went back in May, wonderful trip, although it was only two weeks.

sounds pretty risky....50/50? sigh....

I will apply for citizenship in few years. But it may be too late when I get my citizenship cause the reason why I want to go back is to visit my grandparents. They are pretty old. But, on the other hand,I don't want to risk my status in US either. It's a tough choice.

Is your COP China? which category are you? AS6?AS8?

I want to know more about the process that you went thru. Like what did you show the Chinese costum when you enter and LEFT(important part, cause I heard my people had trouble in this part.) China.

PS: I shouldn't have too much trouble with US coustom(I guess...pls point out if I'm wrong) if I apply for RTD or I-131(what's the difference anyway....?). The part i worry about is leaving China, cause I think everyone have to show the custom some kind of document that prove that you can enter your destination.

You are AS08 right? Assuming that your were NOT the person being persecuted then I think you have nothing to worry about from the United States Government (even if the United States had an issue with you you would have a full chance to explain yourself; my country (USA) is not a dictatorship like China's).

You need to concern yourself with the Chinese end of the story. Many people get out fine. Every now and then people get into hot water with the Chinese government for applying asylum. You are pretty much at their mercy.

Frankly in their system they have the right to punish people who applied for asylum overseas. Is this hard to understand?

Also remember local Chinese officials have confiscated the passports of American citizens who are involved in business disputes with their Chinese partners. My point is that local Chinese officials and border guards have enormous discretion over you.

Man, how can I put this straight? things happen, if you worry that too much, then don't go, it is much more easier than you think, after you have done that, probably you will think like me, try to go through Hong Kong if you still have concern.

The safest way is go back US via Hong Kong or Thailand, it's very easy to get Hong Kong travel permit or Thailand visa in China, but you need spend extra money for the flight.

Double_V, thank you for replying. I have to be cautious because this is the my future that I'm talking about, and I have to go back too because this may be the last chance I can see my grandparents. It's important to me. You guys have more experience for traveling back and forth, that's why I'm here to seek help and more details about the travel. Anyway, thank you again for sharing the story.:)

That sounds good. So, I can apply Hong Kong travel permit as a Chinese Citizen, then I don't have to show GC to Chinese Custom but the Hong Kong custom. I think..I think they won't care about the AS8 code.

Did anyone return to US thru Hong Kong custom recently? I'm wondering if there is any change after 1997.(what if the Mainland custom took over the job or something like that......)

When you leave from HK to enter the mainland you have to be inspected by Chinese customs. When you leave the mainland to enter HK you have to be inspected by the Chinese customs also. Hong Kong and the Mainland are basically two different countries for purposes of border control (otherwise tons of illegal mainland people would swarm Hong Kong).

Yes. If/when you run into trouble with the Mainland officials, neither double_V or I will be there to help you. I am not suggesting you go or not go. You need to gather as much fact as you can before deciding for yourself.
