Has anyone cancelled pending petitions for DCF?

As my frustration with the current process grows, I'm closer to a decision to cancel. I purchased tickets yesterday for a visit to Japan in August to visit my beautiful wife, and I have an appointment during my stay for DCF that I made a few months ago as a back up.

Here's my main question, which I've asked on several boards, but gotten conflicting answers from people who only had 2nd hand knowledge: Do I have to cancel the current petitions in advance, can I do it at the DCF interview, or can I wait until after the interview when I know the DCF has been approved? I figure I can have the letters all ready to go in my pocket and put them in the mailbox on the way out.

So, Have any of you gone this route, and at what point of the process did you cancel the pending petitions? Bonus if anyone did it at the US Embassy in Tokyo.
