H4 Visa Stamping Question

Hi,

My wife is going to New Delhi embassy for visa stamping on June 3rd. Can you please share your H4 visa stamping experience in New Delhi. Mainly the questions they have asked.

I heard that the passport will be sent back by courier. But in our case we need to get the passposrt immediately as I need to add her to my existing I-485 (Green Card) application. That means she needs to reach US as early as possible.
1) So is it advisable to request embassy to hand over the passport on hand?
2) Can we specify a Delhi local address where we would like to receive the passport irrespective the mailing address mentioned in the TT Services web appointment form?
3) While attending the Interview, do they give us the envelope that used to send the passport back and tell us to write the address on it?

Please help!

Thanks

I am not sure as to how it works at Delhi, but as per the Mumbai procedure,
you will get your passport back within 2 days of the interview date.Hence,it should not delay your travel plans, etc.

Make sure you retain the receipt that will be issued at the consulate AFTER the interview. This receipt HAS to be given to the courier when he comes to deliver the passport.Your passport will NOT be handed over to you without that receipt.

I am sure you can specify an address different from the one you mentioned in the appointment form.Check this out when she goes for the interview.

At the time of submitting the H-4 forms, along with the visa fees, you will have to pay for the courier service for the delivery of the passport after stamping.Hence, at the interview, they will not give you any envelope and you do not have to write anything. They will automatically send the stamped-passport to the address specified.Make sure to give the full address INCLUDING the PIN Code or the ZIP code.

Again, the above was the procedure at Mumbai a couple of years back.I do not know if it is the same still and it may or may not differ from the Delhi procedure.

Hope this helps to give you an idea.

*** best option for her to get Visa revalidated from DOS in USand if you send her passport and other documents now she will get Passport back in 3 months from DOS and that is much better than Chennai or Bombay they create lot of problems

The first thing, you should have posted this question on a new thread instead of clubbing it with a question of different type.

Anyway,it is NOT essential in the US to have the same last name for both the spouses(unlike in India). It is also not essential to have the same last name for visa interview. However, if both have the same last name, it kinda assures the Officer who is likely to ask fewer questions on this subject.

Hence,if possible,it is always good to have the same last name.Or it is great if atleast one has the name of the other endorsed in his/her passport.

However, in view of the stricter enforcement of laws, it is esential that full efforts be made to have the last name of the wife changed in the passport.

Else, there is the chance of the dreaded "221(g)".

P.S. In a few years, it might be possible that the hubby has to have his last name changed to that of the wife after marriage:D

---- It can be done in 1-2 days, just catch some agent who sits near passport office in India give some "Chai Pani" and he will get you the things done in 1-2 days
can that be done before the traditional marriage vis a vis a registered marriage?
---AFTER marriage, attach the copy of marriage certificate and affidevit from your wife that she changed her name from XYZ to ABC after marriage to JJJJJ on date....

thanks ginnu,

well the reason for asking processing times was this - the delhi embassy says 7-8 working days...but i am sure they say that to cover all regions of north india..she works in australia and has to leave back 9 working days after the wedding..so the query.

and we are not changing the name of the spouse after marriage - the embassy asks for attestation of husband's name on her passport..so i am asking how long it takes to get that done, not changing her last name
