H4 Visa application

I plan to apply for a H4 visa for my wife .
Is it mandatory that the 'Name of Spouse' column on her passport have my name before we apply for the visa ?
She does not intend to change her last name . Is it sufficient that we provide the marriage certificate and all other relevant documents .
In case that is required , How long does it take in India to get the change done so that my name is added to her passport in the 'Name of Spouse' column.

----- Bombay US consulate asks for this. it is better to get it added on passport and it takes only 2-3 days to get it from passport office, if you know any passport agent he can get it done in one day. you know how things work in India

2-3 days in Bombay ( i dont know about your wife passport office), if you give CHAI PANI to any agent who sits near passport office he can get the things done on same day. in Gujarat one can get in 1 day. in Chandigarh it takes 4-5 days and more Chai Pani, Delhi also takes 3-5 days and more Chai Pani. better to take the help of passport agent if you want it fast ( keep the copies of passport pages with you when you give the passport for changes) They may return the old passport as CANCELLED and give you new Passport with new passport#
