H4 to J1

Hi!

I am here on an H4 visa, I have recently completed a certification in digital design, and was hoping to get some experience in this field. Is is possible for me to convert my h4 to J1.

Please help as I am new to this whole visa stuff:confused:

Yes.

H-4 to J-1 is possible (INS form I-539) if you find a program sponsor for your J-1. If J-1 brings you 2-year home country residency requirement (HRR), then you will need either its waiver or its fulfillment before you could ever get an H-1B or greencard. If possible, H-1B should be preferred.

Is a J1 sponsership given by a company (professional organisation) or an educational instutution and how much time does it take?

Few companies and many academic/research/government institutes can sponsor J-1. If you get an offer from them, they will issue you an IAP-66 form that is required for J-1 visa/status. First you have to contact them and find out whether they are interested and whether they can issue an IAP-66 (equivalent to sponsoring you on J-1).
