H4 to H1B

I can use some help from here. I am a dentist and currently on H4 visa. My husband is on H1B and currently working with a software company.

Now, I want to work as a dental assistant. What should I be doing to be able to work as a dental assistant? From what I understand I need to be on H1 to be able to work? Is that right? How can I get my visa status changed? How much will it cost? And last but not the least is there a minimum hours you need to work to be able to be on H1? Like can I be on H1 and work only 20 hours per week?

Thanks in advance

To get on H1b you need a sponsor (company) that is willing to hire you. If you have not been on H1b before, you probably will have difficulty to get an H1b since there are no visas available for the current fiscal year.

Once you have secured a job offer, the sponsoring company can consult with an immigration attorney to file the visa application.

You should also check if there are any job related requirements, such as certifications that are necessary in case your education/experience was from outside the US.

It is possible to work part time on H1b.

To work as a dental assistant you need registration/license from the state where you want to work.

Instead of 10-12$ per hour job why don't you make a long term goal. Since your hubby (s/w) can support -try to get high score in ADA Part I & II and join a dental school.

FYI, dental assistant/lab technicians does not require a degree so this category may not come under H1 skilled worker caegory.

To give u more info, which state do you live and which year and college did you complete your dentistry

Thanks for your reply. Certainly I am looking forward to Part 1 and Part 2 but in the mean time some experience does not hurt, thats why I thought I should work.

I am in California and I completed by BDS in 2002 from Chandigarh.

Through dental assistance you are not going to get any experience other than the abuse. However you are not eligible for H1.

Some of the schools will take you without part II (TOEFL MUST), start trying now, it is not too late for applying Y 2005 admission. Since Part iii IS TAKEN AWAY competition will be tough in CA for international program.(USC, UCLA, Loma Linda, UOP). Try also out of state.
