H4 to H1B status update for Canadian passport holder

My Canadian wife who is now on H4 visa got the petition approval for H1B visa for October 2005. Now she needs too change her status. I have these questions;

1. Is there a way to update her status without leaving the US? or she has to go to Canada and get the stamp on her passport in the airport?

2. Can she change status now in Aug., or she needs to wait for Oct. 1st to get the H1B stamp?

3. Can she start working before updating her status, and get an SSN with the petition approval only? then update the visa status on the next time she enters the US?

Not at all.
or she has to go to Canada and get the stamp on her passport in the airport?
Go to canada, get appointment from US embassy, and get stamped from the embassy not in the air port.

2. Can she change status now in Aug., or she needs to wait for Oct. 1st to get the H1B stamp? Usually 10 days before start date.

3. Can she start working before updating her status, and get an SSN with the petition approval only?
Yes, if she got her I 94 at the bottom of h1 approval notice.
