H4 to H1

I came to usa on H4 visa in Feb 2006. I have applied for H1 and its approved. The start date on my H1 petition is Oct 1st, 2006. What is my status now, H4 or H1? If i do not start working for my employer until Dec, will I be on H4 visa until then or does my status change on Oct 1st.

Your h1 status starts from Oct 1. 2006.

If you are not going to work for some time better change to H4 after oct 1, 2006. Whenever you are ready go again to H1 (no quota issue).

As you suggested, if i change to H4 again after Oct 1st, can i be able to get back to H1 status in Dec or Jan. Is this valid.
