H4 to H1

I want to know about the H4 to H1 transfer issues. Right now I am on H4 which is valid till Feb 2006. I got my H1 approved last week. Now my question is, can I travel to India next month with H4 visa? If not, can I go on H1 and get it stamped, if so, what kind of questions can I expect from the consulate as I will not have any experience on H1.
When my husband applies for the renewal of his H1 in Feb 2006, can I also send my papers for my H4 extension? If they extend my H4, does that mean that my H1 is not valid anymore?

I appreciate if you can please answer my questions ASAP, as I am planning to go to India next month.

Thanks

If your H1 approval comes with I 94 at the bottom of the approved notice, you are now H1 from the date specified in the approved notice. (no more H4 from the date mentioned in the H1 approval notice).

While going out of US you have to hand over old H4 - I 94 'white card' along with bottom portion I 94 from the H1 approval notice.

While coming back you should go to consulate in your home country (get prior appointment some time takes 3-6 months) get H1 stamped in your pp.

If you are not going to your country now, then you can continue to stay and work with your approved H1 (with I 94 at bottom)
