H4 to H1

Guys,
My wife has been on H4 since Jan'2000.
Now if she was to apply for an H1-B Visa for how long can she get it...since she has been on H4 for 5 years already.

Can anyone elaborate what are our options for her to legally work on H1-B..?

Any inputs will be highly appreciated.

----1 year or the remaining time the date they approve her H4 to H1 change of status ( remember it may take 4-6 months for H4 to H1 COS approval)

----- many try to file H4 to H1 and then dont have job after getting H1 and then with out pay stub go out of status and again try to be on H4. Any inputs will be highly appreciated.
