H4 to H1

Hi

I was on an F1 OPT untill June 2004. I had to go back to India my home country as my H1 visa would start only from Oct 1st 2004.
Meanwhile inorder to come back early than October , I got a H4 stamped in Chennai and came to USA.
Right now I am on H4 visa. Do I need to get the H1 stamped inorder to start working on my H1 and In case I do need the visa stamp, Can i get it done somewhere in Mexico or Canada?

Any help is highly appreciated. I am very much worried about this. Please help as the time is running out for me.

yes u need H1 stamp to start working, as ur current status is H4 that doe snot allow work, else u can file for COS with approved petition, u can go to the border posts, buts is risky.
