I got married last year (september 2010) in India and came to the US on a H4 visa. My husband's priority date is in December 2006. Right now the current date is June 2006 and we are not sure when my husband's priority date will become current. In the mean time I have got a few successful job interviews and employers have asked about my work authorization. In this case is it ok to just accept a volunteer position and wait for my husband's priority date to become current and get an EAD as a dependent and hopefully that it will become current sometime this year or is it a good idea to ask the prospective employer to sponsor an H1 B visa ? If I get an H1 B will I still be able to get an EAD when my husband's date becomes current or will I be no longer considered a dependent ? Is it ok to volunteer with a private firm ?

are you on valid H4 status?
Do you have also pending derivative I-485?
If you have your I-485 Pending then you can apply for EAD. If your I-485 is not filed or pending at this time then you will not get EAD.
if Employer file H1 for you and it gets approved then you will get H1 and NOT EAD. EAD is not linked to H1.
