H4->F1 Urgent..H4 Expiring and F1 getting delayed.. Plz Help

Thanks in advance for reading and your replies.

My wife has applied for F1 Visa on 10th September 2004 to NSC. Her H4 will expire on 18th Jan 2005. In case, if the F1 is not received till January 18th, or if F1 is not approved after January 18th, will she be out of status?

Can we apply for H4 extension, even though, F1 is in processing (Will F1 application be still valid?) or immediately after we know decision of F1?

just to clarify: your wife has applied for a change of status to F-1 from H-4, not F-1 visa? Right? If so, your wife is in legal status while her change of status application is pending, whether it is pending for a month or a year, even after H-4 status expires.
