H1B visa & Canadian passport renewal

Hello
I recently had my H1B visa approved and processed through Toronto in Sept 06. I am living in NYC and my Canadian passport expires in August 07. I am about to send off my passport renewal application but I am wondering what will happen to my H1B visa since it is just a stamp in my passport, a stamp on the I-94 which is stapled to bottom tear off piece of the original petition. I don't have any travel plans in the near future but am always weary of leaving and re-entering the US.?
For example and as another question, I just got back from Mexico and the immigration officer at Newark thought I should have had the original petition with me. I tried to explain that it was taken when the visa was processed in Toronto (POE), but he wouldn't listen. Is there anyway to alleviate this stress of the re-entry to the US?

Do you mean to say original petition or original approval notice ?

Nowaday, POE frequently asks to show approval notice as well as stamp.
YOu should carry approval notice when you enter the US to avoid hussle.
Approval notice should not be taken by consulate. They should return it to you, BTW.

I mean the original I-797B Notice of Action. Since I am Canadian I didn't have to visit a consulate. I just went to Toronto and returned right away to the US. When I went through immigration the officer took the top of the I-797B and only left me with the bottom portion. When I returned from Mexico last week, the immigration officer at Newark thought I should have had the entire original I-797B. I said I only had the bottom piece and a copy and he said that wasn't good enough? Anyone had this experience?
