H1B Transfer - Passport Expired

Hi, I have a question that's really weighing down heavy on my mind, and I would *really* appreciate if somebody could post some information on it.

I am Brazilian, and my passport has just expired on January 6th, 2007. I've been trying to renew it for months now, but because of a trivial document needed for that, what should take a single day might still take months of waiting, as the consulate is getting in touch with my home country to receive said document before handing back a new passport.

The issue is, I've just been laid off by Company A about 2 weeks ago, but found a new company B that game me and offer and wants to transfer my H1B.
My H1B still has a lot of time on it, and every other document is still valid, the passport is the only one that has expired.
I had been told that it should be fine and I should be able to "transfer" my H1B, I just cannot travel, logically, until I've managed to renew my passport.

However, I am concerned that may not be the case. I am currently in the US, and do not plan on leaving the country any time soon, so should the expiration of my passport be a major problem in starting my employment at company B, and getting the H1B transfered?

I am hoping I will be able to get it transfered, but in case I don't will I be able to travel at all, say, to my home country, with the expired passport, if the need to leave the US arises?

I appreciate any help in the matter!
