H1B to L1

I am currently on a h1b visa. India based software company is interested in hiring me and they are willing to do a L1 Visa. Is it possible to get L1? or there any issues? Do i need to leave US and stay in India for sometime before i get the L1 processed. Any information on this is highly appreciated.

I think H to L visa requires a visit outside US , to a US consulate to get the visa stamp.
