I have been working under H1B for the past 3 years. I'd like to go for higher studies (phd) starting Fall 2012. I am planning to quit my US job soon, go back to India for a year, and then come back to US for higher studies as an F1 student. My questions are:
1. After I graduate with a phd and take up a job, how many years do I have as an H1B without filing for permanent residency application? 6 years (since new H1B) or 3 years (since 3 years of my current H1B get counted, then I have 6-3=3 years remaining)
2. During the 1 year I am in India prior to starting phd, can I keep my bank accounts/stock market accounts/vehicle in the US? This probably depends on whether I can retain my SSN or not.
3. What are other important tasks I should take care of before leaving the US?
