H1B renewal and travel

My H1B visas are expiring on 15th May and have initiated the procedure for renewal.
Please let me know the average period before renewal is approved.
Whether renewal would be from 15th may or any other date?

I am also travelling outside US on 29th April and coming back on 13th may. Do I need to take extra care while reentering US considering visa expiration date of 15th May. (Just started renewal process)

----- it will be from 15 may(if lawyer wrote correctly on form I-129)

----- not a problem, (keep your H1 extension filing reciept, employer letter with you and show only if asked)
*** if your H1 exenstion gets approved while you are out of US let your employer/lawyer mail you the approval notice and at POE you show the passport Visa stamp AND H1 extension approval notice you will get I-94 till H1 extension approval, check the date on I-94 if any mistake point out to officer or ask for supervisor to correct it
