H1B pending and Travelling internationally

My H1B was applied for in April 2008 and went in RFE(Request for Evidence). USCIS received my RFE on 23rd June 2008 and have since then re opened my case. I have not received any updates from them since June 23rd 2008 i.e.no approval or rejection yet.(per the website)
I have to go to India in december. Can I do international travel on my H4 visa while my case is still pending at the USCIS if there are no updates from them till then?
Someone told me that my case gets abandoned if I travel internationally with a pending case in USCIS.

-------------------- It seems you are on H4 status in US. if your spouse is on H1 status you can go out and can enter on H4 status.

-------------------------if your H1 was filed as Change of status from H4 to H1 then the above info is true. you can ask your lawyer if that was filed H4 to H1 COS or New H1.
