H1b / h4 / Chilgren / green card

Okay a hypothetical (ugh browsers should have spell checkers) Question.

I am on an h1 my wife on an h4
we have a kid while on this visa status
what is the status of the child is he / she a us citizen ? does my wife get a green card ? do i get a green card ? If my wife gets a green card can she work ?

so the child is a US citizen and lets say the green card app for my wife and i gets denied ....

nothing, you go back to your country (with the kid).
