H1B extension

1.)My H1B is going to expire this Oct 16. When do I need to apply for the extension ?
2) I am in part time H1b but working full time right now . Can I apply for Green card with this status. ?

Help

I heard that once the company apply the H1B for you you can work with that company even if you don't get back the approval . is it true ?

by the way I am not working illegally. I am H1B.

how long does it take...

...to get the extension process done? also, can the visa be revalidated in the US or must one return to the home country (India in my case)? Can I continue working if the extension app is put in, and current H1 has expired?

BTW, Jaxen, I had asked for your help about 8 months ago regarding F1->H1 which I was going to do in Mumbai. It's time I started thinking again about the H1 renewal. Sigh.
