H1b extension

My H1b(6th yr) will expire in Mid November.
I have applied 485 including EAD on Oct 2.
I haven't recived EAD approval yet/I don't think I
will get it before my H1b expires.

I know applying h1b extension is best thing. But
can I get by without applying H1b and continue
working based upon pending I485 and EAD?
I would extend H1b but lawyer fee would be
coming out of my pocket.
