H1B extension - PP holds H4

Hi,
I came to the US on H4 and then got a H1B visa. I am working for the past 3years on H1B and now need to apply for an extension for the next three years. I have not got H1B stamping on my passport (my passport still holds the H4 stamping with which I came into the US).
Can I apply for extension? Or do I need to get my H1B stamped on my passport to apply for extension?
 
you can apply for extension without a visa stamp. visa stamp is required only for entering USA after a travel out of USA.
