H1B cancellation Question

Hi,

I am on H1B with a consuting company working for a client.
I am on vacation in India right now and I am scheduled to
return to US on Feb 5, 2005. While I am on vacation the
client has ended my contract/project on Jan 31. My company
(the consulting company) left a voice mesg on my home phone
(my roommate got that) on Jan 31 saying that my contract at
the client has ended. My company also sent an email to me
on Feb 2, 2005 saying that they are instructing their
attorneys to cancel my H1B.

Given these facts,
1. can you pl suggest if it is safe to go ahead with my plan
to return to US on Feb 5 on the H1B issued by my company ?

2. how long it will take an attorney firm to actually request cancellation of H1B ?

3. Once an attorney firm sends a request to cancel a H1B to
INS, how long will INS to take to update the fact that this
H1B is cancelled ? This question pertains to the fact that
the attroney firm would have sent the cancel request on Feb
2nd. If INS does not get to act on it until Feb 5th, then I
can safely return to US.

4. Will the INS officer at port of entry know that my H1B is
cancelled ? How will they know that my H1B is cancelled ?

5. If INS denies entry at the port, what will happen ? will
I be detained ? will I have a right to a lawyer ? will I be allowed to leave on the return flight to India ?

I greatly appreciate your help as this is a matter of urgency and I am unable to contact any lawyer in US as I am still in India.

Thank you,
-Suri
