H1 Transfer (Exempt to non-exempt)

Hello all:

I am currently working full-time at an educational institution (Visa Status H1). I want to shift to a private company now.

Can i start working for the private company once they file my H1 or do i need to wait till it gets approved by the INS?

You cannot start work till October 1.
