H1 to F1 Status Change - Please advice

Say one is living in USA on H1 visa and applies for change of status to F1 from H1.

Is it required to maintain valid H1 status (get paid by employer) till the approval is obtained?

Or is it ok that the person is on valid H1 status at the time of filing for change of status from H1 to F1?
 
Yes. You can quit your H1 company and wait for F1 approval. If F1 is denied, then you need to leave the country immediately. You cannot also start another non immigrant visa petition, if F1 is denied.
