H1 quota reached

I received a job offer just today and the company is willing to sponsor my H1. I know that INS is no longer accepting H1B applications for this year. My OPT ends on May 22 '05. I will file for H1 in April '05. My concern is what happens to my job between the time my OPT ends and I get my H1.
1) Can I continue working?
2) If not that, can I stay in the country till my H1 comes through?

Please advise me as I have to get back to the company asap.

one more query. if the company is willing to have me back after i get my H1, will it be possible to keep my H1 application valid even if i do have to leave the country? and can i then come back on my aquired H1?

I much appreciate your reply. it has taken a little pressure off this whole issue!

actually my husband is on a F1 here. i can get an F2 status for the duration between my OPT and H1 visa. but can i apply for F1 to H1 and then become F2 towards the end of my OPT? what happens to my H1 application if i change my status? is it better i change to F2 and then apply for F2 to H1?

i will definately take the services of an immigration lawyer as you have suggested.
