H1 Expiry, Green card application and job change

I have a friend who has his 5 years of H1B completed and next year Aug 2009, his H1B expires. He had 2 stages of green card completed, and then changed a job last year. So all the processing completed was lost. This year his new employer said they can file the green card but in the mean time, he has got another good offer that he was planning to consider. New company said, they will not process his green card, but he has to hire an attorny and do it on his own. They may give supplimentary docuements.

Now the question is, by next year what stage of green card needs to be completed for him to extend H1B year by year? Does labor needs to completed or even just filing for Green card makes him eligible to file extension?

Second question is, can he file Green card on his own? I heard that company is supposed to do it as it should be company sponsered and they have to prove that this is the needed candidate. Has anyone on this forum have done green card on their own by hiring an attorny?

Any idea how much it costs?

Thanks again in advance.

-------------------what stages Green Card were completed? was his LC approved? was his I-140 filed and approved? what is the status of hios I-140 at this time. Did he file I-485?

--------------------- Do you mean new employer is saying that he needs to pay the Lawyer fees +other filing fees?

-----for H1 extension his LC pending more than 1 year or I-140 approved
Second question is, can he file Green card on his own?
-----He can if he is eligible to file GC Self petition under Extraordinary ability (EB1)
I heard that company is supposed to do it as it should be company sponsered and they have to prove that this is the needed candidate.
----------------------------that is correct
Has anyone on this forum have done green card on their own by hiring an attorny?
-----------------Many filed under EB1 and got GC
Any idea how much it costs?

Thanks again in advance.

Post the info with full details

Yes, Labour was approved, I-140 was cleared and I believe his I-485 was filed but the Priority date was 2005 or so. His status would have been current if he wouldn't have left the company (The stage when they made everything current last year).

if the I-140 was approved and I-485 filed and pending I-485 hit 180 days then he can use AC21
one can file I-140 through employer A and then file I-485 based on I-140 and it is not must that person should be working with A. Person can be with B as GC is for future job

post the info:
The date I-140 filed...
I-140 approved.....
