been in Mexico twice: no problems in Tijuana, very used to "Aliens"
second time to renew: in Matamorros, no problems in the consulate but at the border they are not use to us: spent more than 2 hours of explanations.
Good luck.
BTW: I have an EU passport.
Got my first H-1 stamp in Calgary, Canada. It went as smoothly as one could hope for. I made an online appointment with them and went by myself (without the help of an attorney). It took the whole morning to wait in line but I got my passport with the stamp back the same afternoon.
Related to this question, has anyone got an H-1 visa stamped in Canada or Mexico after their J-1 visa (or for that matter DS-2019) expired? I am wondering whether it is safer to go with a lawyer.
