What happens if the employer who processed your H1-B refuses to renew it(After the first three years) - Are they liable or is this something that happens every once in a while?
 
Well, at that rate you are being terminated.

You must leave the country i9mmediatelywhen you have been terminated. If your I-94 expires you begin accumulating overstay. If you hit 180 days of overstay you will be barred from entry into the US for 3 years when you leave. If overstay hits 265 days, the mandatory bar increases to 10 years.
