Please help if someone was in a similar situation. I just lost my job and had a valid H1 visa. How long can I stay in the US legally. I have a heard 10 days, 15 days and sometimes 2 months. Some say INS considers a reasonable period of time? What is the max time to be on the safe side.

10 days

there is no other "safe" period.
For a h1 transfer you need latest paystub. If you think in h1 transfer terms you can stay until next pay period.
There have been instances of people getting h1 transfer after 3 months being out of status.
It all depends on your luck, your employer's attitude and you not coming under INS's or other law enforcement agency's view.

Technically on H1B if you loose jjob oyuhave 0 grace period. You get out of status immediately.
This is an insane law and makes no sense as one would have things to dispose beforeone can leave USA.

But there is a TOLERENCE policy base don which if someone loses a job and he files H1B visa transfer within 30 days of being layed off. In that case generally INS approve sthe H1B visa transfer. This is discretioanary and depends onteh immigration officer handling teh case. But the lawyers I have spoken to have said that they have generally seen that transfer is approved if you file in 30 days after layoff.
It is recommended to file H1B transfer withign 30 days of being layed off.

Note; I am not a lawyer and am telling you based on what I have learnt from talking to lawyers.
